How to react when your toddler falls over..!

I just read an interesting question on ( Yahoo Answers). It read something to this affect…

“How do you react when your baby falls down?

I had a friend over and her child fell down onto the cement. She was standing, turned around and lost her balance. She is about 18 mos. Her mom (my friend) instantly reacted to it and was talking to her like “oh my gosh are you okay sweetie?” hugging her and making it into a bigger deal than what it really was in my opinion. Her kid was whining, but no tears….”

This is not the whole question and the woman goes on to tell us how she would react in the situation.

Here is our answer:

When your child stumbles over like this one did above. You shouldn’t really give him/her the idea that every fall is bad. Children learn to deal with little cuts and scratches and learn not to cry at everything if you just ask them if they are okay. They will tend to look at you first to see if you are watching, and this is where they are clever, if you are, they’ll put the tears on for the attention, if you’re not then they’ll give a slight squeal about falling over, but then the tears and moans stop.

It’s amazing to watch them really, because they learn fast and really if you jump to every little thing that happens to them, what will happen if they had a serious accident… They would not know how to cope with it. These little lessons of just brushing yourself off, helps build your youngsters‘ toughness of bigger things.

Sometimes, parents make the mistake of being overbearing. It’s not really a good idea to rush to their aid if they’ve just taken a little stumble. Tell them to get up, brush themselves off and there, all better. Especially if there isn’t even a little graze.

We all learn by our trials and tribulations, let your kids do the same, you are not going to be in the school yard when they fall over…!

So be tough with yourself and stop being over protective, it’s not a good thing for your kids to experience.
