Formulas:

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies under 12 months of age should be fed either breastmilk or infant formula. No other type of milk provides all of the nutrients in the right amounts to support optimal growth. Formula companies use human milk as a standard and produce a product, usually based on cows’ milk, which contains proteins, fats and carbohydrates in a proportion that is close to human milk. Then they add vitamins, minerals and other ingredients to bring the final product as close to human milk as possible. As ongoing research reveals factors in mothers’ milk that were previously not known, the drug companies that manufacture infant formula add them, and advertise the product as being “new” or “improved.” Some recent additions are ARA and DHA. Read labels carefully to know what is in the brand you purchase. When you choose a formula for your baby, it is usually best to start with one that is milk-based, since these are tolerated by most babies and are lower in cost than the specialized formulas. While soy based formulas contain all of the nutrients needed to sustain growth, they also contain phytoestrogens that may affect a baby’s growth and development, and they hinder the absorption of zinc and calcium. According to an FDA paper, the AAP states “Healthy full-term infants should be given soy formula only when medically necessary.” (http://www.fda.gov/Fdac/features/596_baby.html) Specialized formulas for allergic babies are more expensive, and should be used on the recommendation of a pediatrician.

Bottles:

If your formula feed your baby, you will need bottles, nipples (teats), and a bottle brush for effective cleaning. There are many types and styles of bottles available, and what you choose depends upon your preference.

Bottles with disposable liners are fairly easy to use and easy to clean, but they are more expensive than other types because the liners have to be purchased throughout the months that your baby uses a bottle. Plastic bottles are lightweight, and most are easy to clean with hot soapy water and a brush. In recent months, news articles have warned about possible dangers from the leaching of a chemical called bisphenol A or BPA into milk from the plastic when bottles are heated, and also from the linings of the can the formula comes in. Although the FDA states that plastic bottles do not present a hazard to babies, you might want to research the different brands to see which are considered safer before purchasing bottles for your baby. A google search turned up lists of brands which are BPA free.

Different babies do better with different types of nipples. You should choose those with a slow flow at first, especially for a very young baby. If the milk flows too fast the baby may choke, or take in too much air. Be sure to replace nipples that become worn so that they do not break during a feeding.

Formula Preparation:

Infant formula comes in three forms: ready to feed, concentrate, and powder. Ready to feed formula is the easiest to use. It can be stored at room temperature until the can is opened, and is fed to the baby directly as it comes from the can. It is, however, expensive compared to the other types. Both other forms of formula must be mixed with water before feeding. It is very important to read the directions on the can to be sure that you add exactly the right amount of water so that the milk the baby receives is neither too dilute (which could lead to malnutrition) nor too concentrated (which could be hard on the baby’s kidneys). Some pediatricians (and the World Health Organization) recommend boiling all water prior to using it for a baby. Other doctors feel that it is OK to use water directly from the tap as long as it has been proven safe for drinking. If you are not sure, ask your pediatrician. Powdered formula is not sterile, and in recent months, reports have warned about the potential contamination of some such formulas with Enterobacter sakazakii, a bacteria that can cause infections in all ages, but newborns (under 1 month of age) and premature babies are at greatest risk. The World Health Organization recommends that formula given to these infants be ready to feed, or concentrate. If powdered formula must be used for a newborn, it should be prepared with boiling water or heated almost to boiling, then cooled before feeding to kill the bacteria if it is present. Once it is prepared, the formula should be refrigerated or kept cold with ice packs until the baby is fed. Discard any unused milk left in the bottle after feeding, since bacteria multiply quickly in warmed milk. Heating baby bottles in the microwave is not recommended because “hot spots” that can scald a baby may occur. (Never microwave expressed breastmilk because that would kill some of the living cells that protect the baby from illness.)

Feeding the Baby:

Feeding time is very important in terms of your baby’s emotional and social well-being. You should always hold your baby in your arms when giving him a bottle, and cuddle him close. This is a good time to talk to your baby, look into his eyes, and watch him smile and interact with you. His head should be slightly elevated because most bottle nipples flow fast enough to choke a baby who is lying flat when he swallows. When feeding a newborn, stop and try to burp the baby every ounce or so.  Ask your pediatrician how much formula to feed your baby. Most babies know how much they need, and overfeeding can predispose him to obesity later on.

The main goals of parenting young children can be grouped into two general parts, safety, and development. Both are obvious in general terms. Safety-proof your home, your vehicle, and, to the extent which you have control, everywhere you take your little one.

Next, form a flexible plan to support your child’s development through the early years, the school years, teenagers, and into adulthood. You never stop being a parent. The scope of the larger goal is to help develop your child into a health, well-informed, caring, competent individual.

Two of the best parenting skills that you can employ are patience, and presence. Be there.

Be with your child as much as possible. The wall washing will wait; the dishes can wait as well. Spend time in play, in observation, in conversation. Both you and your child require this interaction. Throughout watching how your youngster function, you will be formulating ideas about how your preschooler thinks and problem solves. Watch for talents and abilities that you can support and nurture.

It seems that all other parenting skills are built on the foundation of the art of patience. Young children, all children in fact, regularly possess their own techniques for exhausting your composure, specifically if you are a new parent. Do not let them get to you. They
are effortlessly just being children, after all. Carry on with watching and gaining wisdom. Ultimately, you will turn into the ‘most excellent’ parent/guardian ever. If you grow aggravated and yell at young children, they will not improve, and you will have lost the
opportunity to help grow their gifts.

Parenting young children can truly be straightforward and fun, so long as you understand the principles, and start with the basics. So, presence, patience and planning are the building blocks of parenting young children.

Tip for Parents of Fussy Eaters

Is your baby now a toddler?  If the answer is yes that probably means you have a picky eater and it is probably driving you nuts!  You prepare a nutritious dinner and your toddler will barely sit for more than 5 minutes and when they do sit they pick and poke at their food….not much enter their mouth.

There are many reasons for this picky eater syndrome which usually starts between the age of one to three.  After the first year of rapid growth toddlers tend to gain weight slower.  Their need for food is less.  But of course we really don’t care about that….this picky eater thing is driving us nuts!  Here are a few tips for help avoid mealtime battles:

1) Don’t make mealtime a power struggle. If your toddler won’t eat he / she is not hungry, respect the lack of appetite and don’t make mealtime a power struggle..believe me, you won’t win this one

2) Introducing new foods is never easy, especiall if you have a picky eater.  Try to get your child interested in the new food by pointing out the color, texture and smell.  Let your child take small, tiny bites to try the new food out.  It may take a few tries for your toddler to actually eat a new food……be patient.

3) Routine plays a big part in eating at mealtime. You want your toddler to come to the table hungry and ready to eat.  Limit snack time to end at least one hour before meal time.  This will help ensure that your toddler has some kind of appetite when sitting down to eat.

4) Set a good example of eating habits.  Try new foods together.  Make it fun!  Arrange food on a plate in a fun way.  Happy faces, eat the nose, mouth and eyes.  This can be a good time to learn colors, body parts and new words.

5) Minimize distractions at meals.  Not only will this help your toddler concentrate on the food but it will allow him/her to feel when full.  Feeling full is a very important part of mealtime.

6) Don’t forget that you can be as sneaky as you want. If you child loves soup add protein to the soup in forms of chicken, beef or even quinoa.  If pancakes are the food of choice this week add small, finely chopped vegetables to the batter, the pancakes will be pretty as well as nutritious.  Get in touch with your creative side…it will be fun for both of you.

7)  If your toddler hates his booster seat or high chair and is too small to sit at the table and eat properly consider a toddler sized table and chairs.   This worked wonders for my daughter and granddaughter.  Her small table and chairs is now an extension of the dinner table and she loves to sit comfortably and eat dinner.

Dessert as a form of reward?  All I can say don’t!  This will teach your toddler that sweets are rewards and that desserts are the best food …..ever!  This may increase your childs desire for sweets which is never a good idea.

Every parent wants the best for their baby. But is it really necessary to spend $1000+ on a cot? In this article, Tizzie examines the cot features in different price ranges, and recommends the one she believes is best – for your baby, and for your pocket.

How to choose the best cot for your baby So often we are told that you get what you pay for. Before you go and shell out over a thousand dollars for your baby’s cot you may wish to reconsider this. An expensive baby cot is not always the best choice, as my investigations revealed.

I have looked at just about every cot on the Australian market and have been very disappointed with what I’ve found. The one that I feel comfortable in recommending is only around $400 and is much better than even the $1200 models out there.

Make sure you take your tape measure with you when shopping for a cot. It is very important to look at the height from the base that the mattress sits on to the top of the cot rail – the rail that moves up and down.

Some of the more expensive cots on the market have only 25 inches (about 73cm) from the base to the top of the rail. When you put a mattress in the cot the height, of course, is reduced even more. Some cot companies sell really thick mattresses and the height from the top of the mattress to the top of the rail is as little as 20 inches. This is dangerous because before too long your baby is a toddler and can jump or fall out of these cots.

Another thing to look for when purchasing a cot is to make sure it has all four sides open. It is very important that the air can circulate freely around your baby while they sleep. Some babies push all their bedding to the end of the cot and jam their face up against it. Most babies don’t come to any harm doing this but an open ended cot is preferable because the air can still get through the slats. In a solid ended cot the baby will get hot and sweaty doing this.

Think twice before being talked into buying a cot that turns into a toddler bed. Not that there’s anything wrong with them, just don’t let that be the reason for making your choice. There are several reasons why taking the side off your toddler’s cot is not a feature I would recommend you use, and these are:

By the time your baby is a toddler you may have another baby or a baby on the way so you will want your older child to graduate to a normal bed and free the cot up for the baby.

Taking the sides off a cot suddenly can cause a toddler to feel insecure. A toddler needs to be gradually introduced into sleeping in a normal bed. Taking the sides off a cot suddenly can cause a toddler to feel insecure. You might find your toddler sleeps in the cot-bed for a few nights but then starts to cry or get out. Or you might find your toddler is happy in the cot-bed for 6 weeks and then decides to test the boundaries and gets out.

Or you might simply want to follow my transition from cot-to-bed advice, which is impossible to follow if you have taken the sides off the cot.

To help your child make the transition to a new big bed, set it up in your toddler’s room and to help her feel secure, sit on it with her at different points throughout the day and read stories. Once she is comfortable with the new bed as a place to sit and hang out then suggest she have her daytime sleep in it. Point out that she is a big girl now and this means that she should sleep in a big bed like Mummy, Daddy, siblings or friends she may have.

If she’s not ready on the first day, try gentle persuasion but if that meets strong resistance let her go back to the cot and try again the next day or so. Now picture trying to do this with a cot-bed – you would be putting the sides on and off.

Make the big bed a fun place – not somewhere for punishment or scary stories. Once she has had a good daytime sleep in the new bed, allow her to start having her night-time sleeps in it as well.

I suggest the cot stays in your child’s room and is available for her to use for at least 8 weeks after she starts to sleep in the bed at night. The reason I say this is, in my experience, most children are happy in the new big bed for 6 weeks and then they decide to test the boundaries. You will need the cot available to get over this hurdle. Again, if you are using a cot-bed, this means back on with the sides.

When she decides she is ready to sleep in the big bed in the day and at night as well, you will need to explain to her she can try and sleep in the big bed but she only has one chance. Explain to her if she gets out of bed you will be putting her in the cot. Tell her if she gets out of bed at any time, day or night, you will see this as her asking you to put her in the cot. Then if she gets out of bed you need to follow through with this and pop her in the cot. Tell her it’s her choice if she wants to be a big girl or a baby.

You can see from all this that a cot-bed is just not going to work well using my approach.

Below is a picture of the Grotime Lara cot-bed, available from only $399 to $500, and it passes my test. The side is 29 inches from base to the top of the rail, which is 4 inches higher than some of the more expensive cots on the market. This is a big difference to a toddler.

When buying a cot there are also recommendations for choosing the mattress that goes in it.

A safe mattress is one that is:

* The right size for the cot
* FIRM
* New, clean and in good condition.

The mattress must have no more than a 25mm (1 inch) gap between the mattress and the cot sides and end. A baby or toddler can easily get stuck if there are larger gaps between a poor fitting mattress and cot sides. This is especially dangerous if their face or neck is restricted in anyway. Remove all plastic packaging from the mattress and always make sure the waterproof mattress protector is strong and well fitting.

A soft mattress can increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant death if a baby rolls over onto the tummy. Never put soft bedding, including sheep or lamb skins, under the bottom sheet as this makes the sleeping surface too soft. A test you should perform to see if the mattress is firm enough is to push your hand down on the mattress. If, when you remove your hand, you can see your handprint then the mattress is too soft. If you cannot see your handprint then the mattress is likely to be firm enough and safe for your baby.

A tea tree filled mattress, a pillow, cushion or sofa is NOT a safe mattress as they are too soft and increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant death.

Crib Safety Tips and Recent Dangerous Recalls

Following the recall of more than a million of Delta Enterprise Inc.’s cribs, parents have been stricken with panic and worry about the safety of their infants.

The recall is expected to affect millions of families and included a recall of 1.6 million potentially faulty cribs, according to a Chicago Tribune special investigation. While the 1.6 million cribs are not on the market any longer, many cribs are resold or passed down through families, according to the Chicago Tribune. The faulty cribs were produced from 1995 to 2007 from Delta, which has been deemed the largest distributor of cribs worldwide.

Although the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Delta noted that the recall stemmed from the deaths of two infants who were asphyxiated following the malfunction of the drop side of the crib, on a closer investigation by the Chicago Tribune, the company had an alleged lengthy history of crib malfunctions.

Crib Safety Tips

The dangers associated with faulty cribs can be avoided or reduced, according to the CPSC, by abiding by the following list of crib safety tips:

* Place infants on their backs and ensure that the crib is fitted with a tight-fitting mattress.

* Pillows, comforters, sheepskins, bumper pads, blankets and toys should not be placed within the crib.

* Consider replacing blankets with sleepers.

* Avoid decorative cutouts on the end panels.

* Corner posts should either be very tall or flush with the end panels.

* Cribs that have been lowered should reach at least 9 inches about the mattress support while cribs raised all the way should be a minimum of 26 inches above the mattress support.

* The mattress should be the same size as a crib in order to avoid trapped limbs or body parts.

* There should be a hand-operated, locking drop side that does not unintentionally release.

The three positions available is the wisest choice but some also have two height positions only. In a single height mattress, as your child grows, he could climb out of the crib or could be toppling out of the crib so it is not usually a safe choice.

Mattress support is also very important. Some cribs use vinyl straps that are easily worn out. Some cribs uses the metal bar support and appears to be a much better option. There are also some which make use of the metal spring system where the entire mattress is supported and is the best and most durable option compared with the first two.
